20 Indian Companies Among Global Challengers

“BCG” (Boston Consulting Group) has issued a report mentioning the names of 100 companies around the globe as the ‘Global Challengers’. According to this report, these 100 companies are the most common names in today’s business world who has added more than 1 million jobs and the entire world economy has to depend on these companies to a larger extent.

 

 

For the first time, companies from Qatar and Colombia have got a place in this list. The other countries include Brazil, China, Chile, Egypt and South Africa are also in this list. China tops this list with 30 companies followed by India (20), Brazil (13), Mexico (7), Russia (6) and South Africa (5).



The 20 Indian companies which has made it to this list are as follows:


1. Reliance Industries (RIL)


One of the most common name in the Indian market, RIL is the second largest company in India by revenue and the largest private sector company in India.


RIL has their head quarter in Mumbai (India) and is one of the prominent name in the BCG’s list of the 100 companies. With a wide grip in telecom, petrochemicals, refining and gas industry RIL is expanding its hold in other fields like textile, retail business.


2. Tata Steel


Tata Steel is one of the dominating names in the Indian Steel industries having it’s headquarter in Mumbai, India.


Established on August 26, 1907 by Dorabji Tata, this company now is the 12th largest steel producing company in the world with a capacity of more than 23 million tones. It is one of the largest private sector steel companies in India.


At present Tata Steel operates in countries like China, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, Netherlands and many more.



3. Wipro


Western India Products  (Wipro), was founded by Mohamed Hashan Premji in Mumbai on the 29th of December, 1945 in Mumbai.


During the early days, this company was into the manufacturing of vanaspti, vegetable ghee, refined oils, etc.


After the death of Hasham Premji, his son Azim Premji became the chairman of Wipro. Within the time frame of 1970 to 1980, Wipro shifted it’s focus onto IT and Computing Industries.


Wipro has operational bases in multiple countries around the globe and also has made a strong base in the production of software, personal computers, laptops, lights, baby products, soaps, talcum powder and many more.


4. Bajaj Auto


Bajaj Auto is the leader in scooter manufacturing companies in India.


Founded by Jamnalal Bajaj in 1930, it is now the third largest manufacturer of motor cycles in the world and the second largest in India. It is based in Pune (Maharashtra) and has plants across Aurangabad, Pantnagar.


Today, the company is headed by Rahul Bajaj. With an impressive production figure, Bajaj Auto has been successful in getting listed in The Forbes Global list of the Fortunate Companies for a multiple number of times.


Pulsar has proved to be one the most selling models in the Indian market.




5. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M)


Mahindra & Mahindra was founded in 1945 in Ludhiana by Mahindra brothers, K.C and J.C Mahindra along with M.G Muhammed.


After India Pakistan got separated, the company changed its name to Mahindra & Mahindra. It is the largest vehicle manufacturing company in India.


After obtaining the assembling license from Willy, this company came up with one of the most desired vehicles of all time, Jeep.


Today, M&M has some of the most loved brands in the automobile market. Bolero, Scorpio, Xylo, etc. From a quite long time, M&M is also working in the development of military vehicles. 


6. Tata Motors


Tata Motors  is one of the most important branch of the Tata Group with its headquarter in Mumbai, Maharashtra.


It is one of the leaders in the manufacturing of trucks, vans, passenger cars, buses, coaches and also military vehicles.


It has been ranked as the second largest bus manufacturer and the fourth largest truck manufacturer by volume.


Apart from India, this company has its R&D centers in Spain, South Korea and the United Kingdom. Tata Marcopolo is the joint venture of Tata Motors and Marcopolo S.A.


It made headlines in 2009 with the launch of ‘Nano’, the cheapest car in India.




7. Hindalco Industries


The Aditya Birla group established the Hindustan Aluminum Corporation Ltd  in 1958. It was producing 20 million metric tons of aluminum per year in 1962. Now it is the world’s largest aluminum producer in the world.


The turnover of Hindalco is estimated as $ 14 billion. In 2007, Hindalco acquired the Canadian company Novelis and they became the world’s largest producer of rolled aluminium.


Like many other companies in India, Hindalco also has its headquarter in Mumbai.


8. Tata Chemical (TCL)


TCL is one of the main secondary branch of Tata Steels. In 1944, TCL became the second largest producer of soda ash in India.


They have plants located in different places in India like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh TCL is one of the largest chemical companies and international locations like Kenya, United Kingdom, United States.


With the acquisition of 100 percent stakes in the General Chemical Industrial Products Inc, it became the second largest producer of soda ash in the world.


Its production has extended to chemicals, fertilizers, consumer products, biofuels, cement, pulses and water purifier.





9. Godrej Consumer Products


Godrej Consumer Products (GCPL) is one of the leading producer of customer goods in India. GCPL is based in Mumbai.


With time, it is spreading its grip across the globe. At present GCPL have its manufacturing facilities in Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Sikkim.


Some of the most popular product of GCPL are ‘Cinthol’, ‘Godrej Fair Glow’, ‘Godrej No.1’ and ‘Godrej Shikakai’ in soaps, ‘Godrej Powder Hair Dye’, ‘Renew’, ‘ColourSoft’ in hair colourants and ‘Ezee’ liquid detergent.


10. Bharti Airtel


Founded by Mr. Sunil Mitta in 1983, Bharti Airtel is the first telecom service provider to achieve the CISCO Gold Certification.


It is the largest cellular provider in India and the third largest in the world and is popularly known as Airtel. Push-button telephones, fax machines, cordless phones were introduced in India by this company.


Bharti Airtel has many other brand name under its blanket. It acquired the controls of JT Holdings in 1999. In 2000, it acquired the Spice Cell in Kolkata. In 2004, it launched its first international mobile network in Sri Lanka and in 2010, it acquired Zain ( African operations of a Kuwait based company).


At present, Airtel has the commercial presence in 20 countries around the world.




11. Tata Consulatancy Service (TCS)  


TCS was founded in 1968 by the Tata Groups. It started its service by providing punched cards to the Tata Steel.


During its initial days, it worked with Central Bank of India and also with the Unit Trust of India.


Now TCS is one of the leaders in providing IT services, outsourcing and business solutions. It is also one of the major job providers in the Indian IT sector.


Based on its 2012 revenue, it has been termed as India’s largest IT service company and also the most valuable company of India.


12. Infosys


Mr. N R Narayan Murthy, an IIT Kanpur graduate founded this company in 1981. The initial investment in this company was only 10,000.


Today Infosys is the third largest Indian IT service company. It has its corporate headquarter in Bangalore(Karnataka).


Infosys Labs collaborates with many leading national and international universities like University of Southern California, Viterbi School of Engineering, University of Cambridge, Queensland University of Technology, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, IITB-Monash Research Academy, Purdue University, International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore.




13. Vedanta Resources


This company was founded by Mr. Anil Agarwal in Mumbai in the year 1976.


It is now one of the companies which deals into the various metals and their mining. The major products of this company are aluminium, lead, iron ore, copper and zinc.


Vedanta is the largest mining company in India. It is also the largest company to deal with non-ferrous metals. Apart from India, it has mining operations in countries like Australia and Zambia.


In 2003, this company was listed on the London Stock Exchange for the first time.


14. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories


This pharmaceutical company was founded by Dr. Anji Reddy. Before this company, Dr. Reddy worked with Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals .


They has more than 190 medications, 60 active pharmaceuticals, diagnostic kits, critical care and biotechnology products.


Starting as a small scale supplier to the Indian drug manufacturer, today this company is in the manufacturing of a wide range of pharmaceuticals in India and overseas.


After acquiring the American Remedies Ltd. in 1999, it became the third largest pharmaceutical company in India after Glaxo and Ranbaxy.




17. Crompton Greaves


CG was founded by Col. R.E.B. Crompton in 1978. The early name of this company was ‘Crompton Parkinson Ltd. Greaves Cotton and Company’.


Just before India got freedom this Lala Karam Chand Thapar, a businessman of that time bought the ‘Greaves Cotton’.


CG is one of the leaders in the Indian market in designing, manufacturing and marketing of power generation products. It is a part of the Avantha Group.


Transformers, switchgears, motors, generators, fans, appliances,  pumps, home automation, etc are the operational fields of this company.


18. Bharat Forge


Bharat Forge has its base in Pune. It deals with fabricating of metals.


Its manufacturing plants are all spread into various countries like India, Germany, Sweden, Scotland, U.S., United Kingdom, Germany and Mainland China.


After reaching sales value of $ 659 million in 2006, Forbes magazine rated Bharat Forge as one of the best in Asia.


By the end of the year 2005, this company increased its sales by a margin of more than 5 percent.


Some of the products of this company are front axle assembly and components, general engineering equipment, hydraulic and mechanical presses, band saw machines for cutting metallic rounds, etc.





19. Motherson Sumi Systems


Motherson Sumi Systems was established in the year 1986. It is the leader company of the Samvardhana Motherson Group.


Motherson Sumi System is the result of the joint venture of the Samvardhana Motherson Group and the Sumitomo Wiring Systems of Japan.


This company has its offices and manufacturing units in 24 international like Germany, Singapore, Sharjah, Ireland, U.S., United Kingdom and 11 Indian locations.


It is one of the leading manufacturers of automotive mirror and wiring harness for passenger cars. Plastic components and modules for the automotive industry is also one of its main product.


20. Larsen & Toubro


Henning Holck-Larsen and Soren Kristian Toubro, two Danish engineers started this company in 1983 in Mumbai, India.


This company started serving as a representative of Danish manufacturer of dairy equipment. The Second World War restricted the imports and  these two engineers started to undertake jobs and also provide service facilities.


Later on, this company turned towards refitting ships. This gave rise to a new company known as Hilda Ltd.


Today, L&T is a prominent name in cement industry, construction, power plants among countries like India, Middle East, Africa, Australia, South-East Asia.
